Ron checks out all the latest model releases
There are two 1:43-scale hand-crafted models from the Brooklin stable to review this month. Firstly, from the Lansdowne range of British cars there is LDM 42, a Wolseley 18/85 SIII of 1939.
The well-captured lines of the model are typical of the late 1930s, with separate front wings, running boards and a small boot. All panel lines are finely etched into the metal. There are loads of plated parts that enhance this model and these include the grille, bumpers, door and boot handles, separate head and side lights, tail lights, fuel cap, hub caps, side bonnet grilles, bonnet hinge and windscreen surround that includes the wipers. The number plates are also well depicted, and have authentic registration for Kent. The rear plate is flanked by typical ‘D’ lamps which have red lacquered lenses. There are also four other small lights or reflectors at the rear lacquered in red.
The radiator grille is very well depicted, and it includes the all-important ‘illuminated’ Wolseley badge. Running boards and sunroof are separate parts painted an appropriate satin black. Interior detail is good, and features separate front seats and a bench at the rear. Underside detailing is basic, but the wheels are very authentic-looking and are shod with convincingly treaded tyres. The Wolseley is flawlessly painted deep grey-blue, with a grey interior.
Ford Ranchero
The second model from Brooklin is BRK 108, a Ford Ranchero pick-up of 1957. It is quite a massive model, even in 1:43 scale. The lines of the Ranchero are very well captured. The model has been enhanced with the usual plated parts including the massive bumpers, broad grille, lamps, bonnet mascot, aerial stub, handles and windscreen wipers. In addition there a driver’s door mirror for the owner to add is supplied in the box. The grille has been given a wash of black to enhance the detail, and the taillights have a red lacquer finish.
The load area is well detailed, and includes a covered ‘load’ with a portion sticking out. This is a nice touch. The interior is also detailed and can be admired through the large clear windows. The all-important wrap-round windscreen is well shaped and very snugly fitted. Underside detail just covers the basic structure. Wheels are well represented and have chromed hubcaps. Tyres are realistically treaded and are fitted with typical ’50s broad whitewall sides.
The Ranchero is painted a smooth, glossy red with the interior and load well in a matching satin finish red. The load is covered with turquoise-coloured ‘canvas’ with the uncovered portion in black. Brooklin and Lansdowne models can be found at most model shops, or call the New Zealand agent, Nostalgic Automotive Miniatures, 16 Haesler Cres, Howick. Phone 09 535 5725, fax 09 270 0794. Thanks to Brooklin Models Ltd, Bath, UK, for the review samples.
MG-Rover
There are two slightly delayed releases from Vanguards (now part of the Corgi range as the name Lledo has been dropped) — VA09200 Rover 75 and VA09300 MG ZT. Both are old names, but the cars belong to the current school. Naturally, the castings are very similar — as are the real cars — but full marks to Vanguards, as the MG has the extended spoiler on the boot. Both cars are neatly cast and follow the modern practice of having flush glazing, plated parts and suspension on the wheels.
The MG is finished in Trophy Blue with black trimming. The door mirror backs are painted body colour, with a black frame and a shiny face. The detailed interior is black. On the other hand, the Rover 75 is painted British Racing Green (with a slight metallic tinge), has fully chromed door mirrors and silver trim around all the window frames. The interior is also black. Underside detail is good; and both cars have unique wheel castings with tyres that carry fine treading. The models come complete with a display case and are securely fitted to the base — there are five screws to undo to liberate the model!
Vanguards 1:43 models are available at most hobby shops and retail for around $46. Thanks to Heritage Miniatures, PO Box 12366, Hamilton (ph 07 855 6708) for the review models. Trax Models has just released a 1:43 1969 Valiant Pacer Sedan, and I hope to have an example to review next time.
