Classic car book reviews: Graham Hill Scrapbook 1929-1966 by Philip Porter

Philip Porter pioneered the landscape scrapbook format of assembling motoring memorabilia and documents in book form with his Jaguar Scrapbook which, for reasons unclear, sank without trace on launch in 1989.

I thought his concept was fascinating. So did Porter, and he has now brought out two large landscape Stirling Moss scrapbooks with more on the way, re-launched his Jaguar tome in larger format to match the others, and has now produced the first of two scrapbooks on the larger than life Graham Hill. The book runs in seasons, with each year’s calendar of results at the start of each chapter for easy reference. The scrapbook format means that photos of races and cars and parties blend in with notes and stories, which makes it a splendid dip-in book as opposed to a sit down and trudge through tome.

The book is a prized collection of Graham Hill career memories and memorabilia, photographs, race passes, personal snaps, and race photos from wins to crashes.

It’s a wonderful wander down memory lane, the way racing used to be in the Good Old Days.
