I own a 1991 TD 2000 – the only Gasons factory built car in existence that was painted BMW Blue. It is car number 100 from the Ararat build.
I believe the Australian built cars (not the DIY jobs) are a unique part of local motoring history, more so than the later Malaysian examples.
With the Nissan Twin Spark (86kw) and a 900kg kerb weight performance is more than adequate – not far off a Morgan +8 from the early 80s in fact.
Top speed is limited by aerodynamics, not power and the handling is go-kart like. Comfort is surprisingly good and the car can be used as a daily driver due to the MX5 levels of reliability.
These cars are unique and, with the superb suspension and the fibreglass body, are a lifetime ownership option.
The only modifications I would make are a sportier exhaust (perhaps to take it up to 90kw+), and, in the event the Pintara engine goes to god, a later series Nissan motor possibly with DOHC.
My car has had a voltmeter fitted ex-factory. This is a sensible addition as it makes sense to keep an eye on the electricals when it is only driven once a week.
In a year’s ownership it has not used a drop of oil or any water.
The car runs cool – unusual for something that looks so British – and the acceleration can be startling, particularly for people next to you at the lights who think it is going to be slow.
Fuel economy is brilliant – with the five speed box it is ticking over at just under 3000rpm at 110km/h.

Got to love it!
