In actual fact Grineau was his family name - he was born Charles William Grineau, eldest son of Charles Grineau the well known illustrator Alfred Bryan.  Charles started his career in his father&#039;s studio as Johnny Bryan, becoming John Bryan as he matured and finally reverting to his own surname of Grineau but keeping Bryan as his forename and adding &#039;de&#039; to make it sound more upper crust!
