In actual fact Grineau was his family name - he was born Charles William Grineau, eldest son of Charles Grineau the well known illustrator Alfred Bryan. Charles started his career in his father's studio as Johnny Bryan, becoming John Bryan as he matured and finally reverting to his own surname of Grineau but keeping Bryan as his forename and adding 'de' to make it sound more upper crust!
