It is a 1:43 Spark brand model of the #53 EMKA Productions Ltd/ Michael Cane Racing BMW M1 that raced in the Group 5 class at Le Mans in 1981. Powered by a naturally aspirated 3497cc twin-cam straight-six engine, the M1 was driven by the English pairing of David Hobbs and Steve O’Rourke, along with Irishman Eddie Jordan. It was sponsored by Hawaiian Tropic, SDC Builders and EMKA (Steve O’Rourke’s production company).
This BMW M1 model, along with the rest of the Spark range, are available from specialist hobby shops nationwide. For more information about the Spark,
Bizarre or TrueScale ranges phone John on 09 845 4551, or visit the SPR website at www.spr.co.nz to download the latest catalogue.

Go into the draw to win this Spark brand BMW M1 by answering the following question.

Steve O’Rourke wasn’t simply known as a racing driver. What was his main claim to fame?

To enter this competition,

This month SPR Limited has supplied us with two classic V12-powered BRM F1 cars modelled by Spark – the #8 P160 driven by Pedro Rodriguez into second place at the 1971 Dutch GP, and Reine Wisell’s #28 P160B from the 1972 Monaco GP. These two models demonstrate perfectly the lengths that this manufacturer goes to in order to create totally accurate 1:43-scale models. Because these Tony Southgate-designed BRMs share the same monocoque tub, and are essentially the same car, it would have been very easy for Spark to have simply made a few superficial changes, added different decals, and marketed two different versions of same model. But this is not the Spark way. Instead it has gone to the effort of faithfully duplicating both the subtle and obvious differences between the two models.

You will notice the obvious overhead air-box added above the engine, plus the two vanes on the rear wing of the 1972 Marlboro-sponsored P160B. But Spark has also duplicated the less obvious differences between the P160 and P160B. These include – on the ‘B’ – the taller Venturi around the radiator outlet; the addition of front brake cooling ducts; oval oil cooler air intakes (they were rectangular on the 1971 car); and higher side mirrors. All these miniature details combine to create a truly authentic model.

It seems comical that accurate scale models of period race-cars cannot be sold with tobacco sponsorship applied – it’s hardly likely that this would influence a serious model collector to take up smoking!

However the Marlboro decals are provided separately for you to apply to Spark’s BRM P160B. For our photo shoot SPR Limited, the importer of the Spark brand, has already applied the cigarette decals to our featured model – an added benefit for our competition winner.

These BRMs also have a strong Kiwi connection, as Howden Ganley drove for BRM during this period. He raced the Yardley BRM P160 in four races during the 1971 season, and had five races in the Marlboro-sponsored P160B during the 1972 season.

Go into the draw to win the 1972 Marlboro sponsored P160B featured here by clicking on the link below and answering the following question.

Name the famous Swiss driver killed when his BRM P160 crashed at Brands Hatch in 1971?

<a

Produced from 1974 to 1982, this second generation Elite had all the legendary handling and performance expected from a Lotus, and carried four adults in high-speed comfort. While outclassed by modern performance cars, in its day the front-engined, rear-wheel drive Elite boasted a higher top speed than a Porsche 911 – no doubt aided by a kerb weight of approximately 1016kg (2240lb).

Like previous production Lotuses, the Elite used fibreglass for its hatchback body, which was fitted to a steel backbone chassis evolved from the Elan and Europa. The Elite was the first of a new generation of Lotuses, including the Eclat, Excel and Esprit, to use the all-alloy, twin-cam 907 engine (which actually first appeared in the Jensen-Healey).

Spark’s 1:43 version of the Elite is beautifully detailed with many photo-etched parts including the front spoiler; windscreen wipers; hatchback frame and hinges; and minute individual Lotus lettering. The resin body means that the bonnet louvres and panel lines are sharply moulded, and the metallic gold paint is flawless. Particularly impressive are the chrome window frames which, in the past, were either simply reproduced in silver paint or more realistically in photo-etched steel. But Spark has now started to use chrome foil, which allows for a more scale-realistic flush finish – especially on compound-curved surfaces. Both are from their 1:43 Spark range, and both are beautifully modelled in resin with numerous photo-etched metal components, such as wipers, grilles and body trim. Because they are open top vehicles, Spark has made an extra effort with the interiors, and both are fully detailed.

Our first feature model is a cream 1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster. This sensational successor to the SS100 was launched in roadster form at the 1948 London Motor Show, and was produced until 1954. Its ‘120’ name referred to the 120mph (193kph) top speed (faster with the windscreen removed) which made the XK120 the world’s fastest standard production car at the time of its launch. Spark Models has captured the XK120 perfectly in miniature, with its distinctive rear wheel spats, standard steel wheels, and absence of external door handles. Other 1:43 XK120 models soon to be released by Spark are the 1953 cabrio; the modified speed record ‘bubble-top’ that achieved 172mph on a closed dual carriage way near the town of Jabbeke in Belgium in 1953; and the #15 XK120 that raced at Le Mans in 1950.

Our second model is a red Aston Martin DB2/4 MkIII cabriolet from 1959 – more correctly simply called the Aston Martin MkIII. The MkIII was the final version of the very successful DB2 series, and it no longer featured the high grille found on the other DB2s, thus resulting in a much lower frontal profile. It was also the most powerful of the DB2 series, and interestingly shared the same 193kph top speed as the Jaguar XK120. Only 551 of the hand-built MkIIIs were produced during its production life from 1957 and 1959. Again Spark has captured the car beautifully in 1:43 scale, with the wire spoke wheels, dual-exhaust system and brightwork being especially impressive. Spark is also due to release a model of the 1953 DB2/4 cabriolet.

Go into the draw to win the Spark XK120 roadster featured here by clicking the link below and answering the following question.

In the July 2011 issue of our magazine we featured another 1:43 XK120 Jaguar from Spark Models. What year and model ‘120’ was it?

<a

Essentially an E24 model fitted with a version of the M1 powerplant, the M635CSi sprinted from 0-96.5kph in 6.1 seconds before reaching a terminal speed just shy of 257kph (160mph). Now regarded as a true modern classic, the M635CSi remained in production until 1989.

New to AutoArt’s 1:43 range are these two models depicting the M635CSi – in silver or burgundy. Both models are extremely well detailed and include opening bonnets.

Thanks to the NZ distributor, we are giving away the burgundy car to a lucky reader. Just click on the link below and answer the following question:

In what year did BMW launch its first Six Series coupé?

<a

The Target sponsored, Ganassi Racing Riley was driven by the trio of Scott Dixon, Dan Wheldon (both from IndyCar) and Casey Mears (from NASCAR), and recorded the first Rolex 24 Hour win for the Ganassi Team. The Kiwi connection is sure to make this model popular with collectors, but be quick – order one from your local hobby shop now, because this model will sell fast.

Over the last few years Spark has released an extensive collection of 1:43 Le Mans winners ranging from 1950 to 2011. It has now released a new range of over 20 Daytona winners, including models of the first placed Lotus 19, Lola T70, GT40, BMW CSL, March 83G, Jaguar XJR, Riley & Scott, Dallara-Judd, and of course a large selection of Porsche winners – not surprising, as the Stuttgart marque has won at Daytona 22 times! Next most successful marque is Ferrari with five wins, Ford with four, and Lexus with three victories.

Scott Dixon’s Riley MkXI-Lexus is from this new ‘Daytona Winners Collection’, which is distinguished by Spark’s unique black packaging. As with all Spark models, it is beautifully crafted, with the numerous ducts and vents in the resin bodywork being particularly well moulded. The multi-spoke wheels are finely detailed, and the many Target graphics are accurately applied.

Go into the draw to win the #02 Riley MkXI-Lexus featured here by clicking the link below and answering the following question.

What is the full name of the team owner of Ganassi Racing?

<a

On a more modern note, Scalextric has also just released a model of the new McLaren MP4-12C finished, of course, in McLaren’s famous shade of orange.

Single-seater fans are also catered for with two very special, limited edition models – Jim Clark’s 1967 Lotus 49 is from Scalextric’s Collectors Club range and only 1500 units will be made. This beautifully built model is well-detailed, but you’ll need to be quick if you want to own an example – the NZ entitlement is very small.

He may be past his prime, but Michael Schumacher still has a strong following, and Schuey fans now have this terrific commemorative model of the Mercedes/ Petronas F1 car to add to their collection. Limited to only 3000 units worldwide, this model comes in its own presentation box.

Check out the huge range at your local model and hobby shop – and, thanks to the NZ distributor, we have one example of the fabulous McLaren MP4-12C to give away to a reader.

To enter the draw just click on the link below and be ready to answer the following question:

What type of engine powers the McLaren MP4-12C?

<a

It is from the Bizarre brand, which has to date produced about 20 different models of the GT40, ranging from the 1964 test car to 1966 Le Mans versions (the McLaren/ Amon winner from Le Mans 1966 is also due later this year).

This Bizarre model is of chassis number GT/111, one of the 12 original pre-production GT40s, and one of only five open top cars ever produced – GT/108 to GT/112 were all Spyders – making it an ultra-rare beast. GT/111 has a fascinating history, being first used in April 1965 for testing prior to the Le Mans 24 Hour, then running in the Targa Florio the following month.

John Wyer sent the Spyder to Sicily thinking the open cockpit would be cooler during the 10 laps of the 71km mountain road circuit. Equipped with a 4.7-litre (289ci) V8 and five-speed ZF gearbox, the Spyder was running as high as third in the race, but crashed on lap nine, when Bondurant ran into loose gravel spread by another car, hitting a wall, and tearing off a front wheel.

GT/111 was shipped back to England, but because the production GT40 was now available, plans to repair the Spyder were dismissed. So despite the fact it was not badly damaged, GT/111 languished in the back of the Ford Advanced Vehicles workshop and was gradually stripped of usable parts. After a clean up in the workshop, GT/111 was sent to a scrap merchant, and for the next 40 years was presumed destroyed.

Remarkably, in September 2006 the remains of a GT40 were discovered in a lock-up garage in Stratford in East London. And after scrutiny by Ronnie Spain (one of the most respected GT40 experts), it was declared to be GT/111, the missing Targa Florio car. With the provenance confirmed, restoration started, and a mere nine months later the finished car raced at the 2007 Goodwood Revival. It has been restored to its 1965 Targa Florio specifications, complete with Linden Green paint.

Since restoration it has been actively campaigned at classic events such as the Spa 6-Hour, Classic Le Mans, and Goodwood Revival. Earlier this year GT/111 was put up for auction but unfortunately it failed to sell – the highest bid of US$2,100,000 ($2,539,000) not enough to reach the reserve price!

To go into the draw to win the Bizzare brand Ford GT40 Spyder click on the link below and be ready to answer the following question:

What is the item number for this model? (hint: It starts with the letters ‘BZ’ and can be found on SPR’s online catalogue.)<br

Spark uses resin for its bodies – not die-cast metal – because it provides extremely sharp body lines around doors, bonnets, vents etc, plus it uses hand assembled photo etching for delicate parts such as grilles, window frames, windscreen wipers and badges. Although a more expensive option than using cheaper plastic injection-moulded components, the photo etched parts provide scale thickness appearance – something that is appreciated by collectors.

Another characteristic of Spark is its use of extremely thin plastic sheet glued into each individual window frame, whereas most other manufacturers continue to use a single plastic injection moulding to represent all the windows in the car – which in 1:43 scales often looks too thick and unrealistic.

Spark’s 1:43 Jaguar XK120 coupé benefits from the modelling processes mentioned above, and it looks exquisite. If you get a chance, have a good look at this model at your local hobby shop. Standout features are the rear over-riders attached to photo etched brackets, the tubular exhaust, and driver side window which is modelled half down – highlighting the previously mentioned thin plastic sheet used for windows.

To go into the draw to win the Jaguar XK120 coupé click on the link below and be ready to answer the following question:

Why was this Jaguar called the ’120′?

<a

Alas, no Aussie Holdens this month, but Ford fans will be thrilled to see the latest additions to the Aussie Road Ragers range.

The 1:64 die-cast models illustrated here show a 1969 XW Fairmont station wagon, a 1969 XW Falcon panel van (painted up in Mobilgas livery) and a 1971 XY Falcon panel van resplendent in Amoco colours.

However, pick of the crop has to be this delightful 1971 XY Fairmont station wagon. Finished in blue with a white roof, the Fairmont is pulling a vintage caravan – a 1967 Viscount Alumvan for all you caravanning spotters. The Ford even has a surfboard attached to its roof – how iconic can you get?

It gets better – thanks to Toymod, the NZ distributor of Aussie Road Rager models, we’ve got one example of the Fairmont/ Alumvan combo to give away to a lucky reader. Just answer the following question to be in to win.

In what year did the Fairmont appear in Ford Australia’s model range?

Thanks to the good guys at Toymod, the NZ Vanguards distributor, we have one example of the road-going Golf to give away to a lucky reader. Simply answer the following question.<img

It was in fact a roadster with a hardtop which unfortunately provided less than ideal aerodynamics – some of the later cars were fitted with full fast-back coupé bodies that proved to be more effective.

Twelve of the Lightweights were produced and featured Lucas fuel injected, aluminium-block versions of the 3.8-litre Jaguar engine with over 224kW (300bhp). However, unlike its predecessors – the C and D-Type – the Lightweight did not win at Le Mans, Sebring, or any other major international races, but did have some success in lesser national races.

Our featured 1:43 model from Spark is one of the three cars ordered by American Briggs Cunningham for his assault on Le Mans in 1963. Cunningham first entered his three Lightweights – painted in his traditional colour scheme of white with two blue stripes – at the Sebring 12-hour prior to Le Mans, where they finished eighth, 19th and DNF. At Le Mans the cars were competitive in practice, but in race two, they were out before the 40th lap, while the surviving Lightweight finished ninth overall and second in class behind a Cobra Daytona Coupé.

Spark’s 1:43 version accurately models all the unique details of the Le Mans Lightweight including the vent in the roof and rear; fast-fill racing fuel cap; and aerodynamic aids behind the front wheels. Spark has modelled all three of the Cunningham Lightweights from Le Mans 1963 – our #15 feature car, and number 14 and 16 – plus the number eight, nine and 10 E-Types that Cunningham took to Le Mans in 1962.

Go into the draw to win the #15 Lightweight E-Type featured here by answering the following question:

Which New Zealander drove the #20 Cunningham E-Type Lightweight that finished eighth at Sebring in 1963?

<a
