With the continuing popularity of the BMW racing series, interest in BMW 3-Series cars is also increasing – whether for racing or for pure road use. If you’re using your E30 3-Series as a road car, one thing you will have noticed is that the BMW’s original headlights leave room for improvement when pressing on at night – making them a good candidate for an headlight upgrade.
In this month’s Home Mechanic (p092), we look into the subject of headlight upgrades and, while discussing the technicalities of the subject with Hella NZ, we discovered a small number of twin headlight, E30 BMW 3-Series Hella DE Conversion Sets. This conversion set has now been discontinued, but Hella NZ still have a few sets in stock. These kits comprise the entire twin headlight assembly unit and are easily fitted by the home handy man. And the benefits? According to Hella NZ, these new lights offer significantly better road illumination and a greater range, especially on low-beam, with the H1 high beams matched to the improved performance of the DE low beams. For those familiar with DE lights, these work very similarly to a light projector – the bundled light beam being projected onto the road through a system of lenses. An integrated orifice produces a sharp cut-off which limits scattered light. The advantage of this system is that, while producing better illumination, dazzle for oncoming drivers is reduced.
After a spot of haggling, we persuaded Hella NZ to give us two of these NOS conversion sets in order that we can offer them as a prize for our E30-driving readers.
