There are some purists out there who are driven to combine modern engineering with classic style and their achievements are often varied. The latest outfit to try its hand at this automotive balancing act is Rizk Auto of Arizona, USA, with a recreation of the famous 1957 Aston Martin DBR2 racer.

Named the RA DBR2 it’s built around a state-of-the-art carbon-fiber tub and aluminum honeycomb monocoque chassis that weighs just 100 kgs (220 lbs), it’s covered with carbon-fiber body panels lined with Nomex. Fairly space-age for a classic roadster, well it gets better. A substance called Aerogel which is a NASA-developed heat insulator is being used in a roadgoing automobile for the first time.

Each example is built to order, and customers can specify their choice of powertrain options between Jaguar inline-six and V12 engines or a Corvette LS3 V8. The original Aston DBR2 was an advanced machine in its day – this modern vehicle continues that tradition.
