January is only a couple of weeks away, and it’s a busy month for motor enthusiasts over in the States. Along with the Detroit Auto Show, classic car auctions kick into gear with televised auctions from Barrett-Jackson and more traditional events from Russo and Steele and RM. If any classic car collectors have money left to burn it will be laid down next month.
The highlight of the upcoming auctions will likely be a 1964 Shelby Cobra 427 that will be offered to the highest bidder at RM’s sale at the Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona. While just about any Cobra deserves attention, this particular one is the actual prototype for the legendary 427 Cobras. Nicknamed the “Flip-Top” for its clam shell design, the car actually competed extensively on American tracks like Riverside, Sebring, and Nassau, and has an solid vintage racing history.
RM doesn’t provide an estimate, but many are predicting the final bid could easily reach seven figures.
