auction

Classic and sports car auctioneers Historics recorded solid sales results at their most recent auction in the UK, in front of a packed audience at its permanent base at Brooklands.
With the number of registered bidders on the eclectic line-up of 72 fine motor cars up an impressive 20%, a total 48% of consigned Lots were sold, grossing just under £1,000,000.
During proceedings, there was ferocious bidding on an immaculate 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 litre Cabriolet — one of only 55 right-hand drive models ever built —reaching a robust final sale price of £80,460.
Highlighting the continued clamour for good quality Aston Martin’s, a 1967 DB6 Mk 1 Saloon — formally owned by an Aston Martin Newport Pagnell employee — sold at the top end of its estimate, for £78,225.
Three Mini Mokes offered for sale all achieved over their estimate, with two returning to the Channel Islands and the last remaining Moke staying in the UK, despite iBidder – the online bidding system – fielding offers from as far afield as Australia and the USA.
Also proving particularly popular amongst auction-goers were a number of competition cars, with a 1954 ‘Barn Find’ Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk 1, bought new by ex- works racer Noel Cunningham-Reid, eventually selling for £63,000, whilst a 1956 Jaguar XK140 Fixedhead Coupe Competition reached £46, 935 and a 1954 Triumph TR2 Supercharged fetching £18,438.75.
Commenting on the recent sale, Historics’ Auction Director Edward Bridger-Stille remarked; “We’re hugely encouraged by the growing number of people attracted to our auctions at Brooklands, and delighted we were able to deliver such a varied and exciting line-up of cars.
“The market is hugely competitive at the moment, which in part was reflected in the number of lots that narrowly failed to reach their reserves. With continued post-sale activity, we’re also now looking forward to our two December sales and are well advanced in consigning some exceptional cars.”
Historics at Brooklands next auction is on December 4th.

In the same year as Janis Joplin penned the famous line, “Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz”, the finishing touches were being applied – by hand – to the 280SE 3.5 litre Cabriolet, which has now become the latest showpiece to be consigned for sale by Historics at Brooklands at their forthcoming UK auction on September 25th.
And the American singer/songwriter’s words will no doubt strike ‘accord’ amongst fans of the German automaker, as this eminently appealing 1970 ‘Benz is one of only approximately 55 right-hand drive models of its kind.
The luxurious, five-seater convertible epitomises the Mercedes-Benz marque, with much sought-after styling mated to a high-performance 3.5 litre V8 engine, and is a fine example of why both demand, and price, is continuing to increase.
Indeed, this Lot is expected to fetch offers in the region of £70,000 – £90,000 ($153,000 – 197,000 NZD), some 10 times greater than its ‘lofty’ ticket price of £7,249 at the time of its launch.
Instantly admired, the 3.5 litre version of the 280SE was given stacked twin headlights and adorned with more chrome trim — in addition to the iconic oversized grille – to cater for its wider, bigger bow. With the car also sitting one inch closer to the floor than the straight-six model, the 3.5 litre V8 boasts enduring good looks that have withstood the test of time.
With the odometer showing just 21,981 miles from new, the car has benefited from much care and attention, with some £12,000 spent on meticulously maintaining the paintwork and a further £5000 invested on re-trimming the interior to an exacting standard.

A BMW 732i originally bought new from a dealership in High Wycombe, UK back in 1982 by the late author Roald Dahl, is going to auction by Historics at Brooklands on September 25th, with 20% of the profits generated going to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.
On sale with no reserve, the mony donated to Dahl’s charity will go towards providing nurses, carers, equipment and toys, designed to improve the lives of seriously ill children in the UK.
Commenting on the forthcoming sale, Historics Auction Director, Edward Bridger-Stille, remarked: “Our gratitude must go to the current vendor, who like us, recognises this fantastic opportunity to support a marvellous charity. Roald Dahl’s stories made an indelible contribution to the bedtimes of many millions of children and we are delighted to play our own small part in paying thanks.”
The first BMW’s to feature service interval indicators and a quirky climate control system, this reliable vehicle has completed over 100,000 miles and is described as good throughout.
Interested parties will get an opportunity to view the Lot prior to the auction, when the car appears at a garden opening at Gipsy House — Roald Dahl’s former home – in Great Missenden, on the 12th September, as part of the Roald Dahl day celebrations the following day.

Bonhams Auctions is presentiing an extremely rare 1948 Streamliner “Woodie” station wagon, estimated at €55,000 — 75,000 ($99,000 – $135,000), at its sale of Fine Motor Cars and Automobilia at the ‘Weekend de l’Excellence Automobile’ held on the former site of the French Grand Prix circuit of Reims-Gueux on Saturday 11th September 2010.
The ‘Woodie’ station wagon, with its characteristically half-timbered body, ranks alongside the pickup truck as a quintessentially American vehicle. The style originated in the 1930s, its popularity peaking in the immediately post-war decades, though the look has been periodically revived by manufacturers on both sides of the Atlantic ever since.
Towards the end of the 1950s the Woodie became the vehicle of choice among California surfers, who appreciated its ability to carry several passengers and their boards. Surfer pop bands The Beach Boys and Jan & Dean both referred to them in hit singles, thereby enshrining the Woodie’s cult status. It has also featured in countless movies.
Pontiacs of this period are often referred to by the ‘Silver Streak’ name, a reference to their multiple chromed hood strips – a styling device first introduced in the mid-1930s. Boasting a wheelbase of 122″ (3,099mm), the Pontiac Streamliner Woodie was the largest on the market and could seat up to nine; alternatively, removing the rear seats created even more space.
The 1948 model is the last of what might be termed the ‘real’ Woodies, when the entire rear body structure was made of timber. In 1949 steel was used for the roof and progressively fewer components were made of wood up to 1953 when the last of these Pontiac station wagons was made. Manufactured by the skilled craftsman at the Ypsylanti Furniture Co in Michigan, the body of this 1948 Woodie incorporates 523 parts made from either mahogany or Canadian maple.
Out of the 23,000 Pontiacs made in 1948, only 1,000 left the factory with the eight-cylinder engine and three-speed manual transmission like this one. Surviving ’48 Pontiac Woodies are rare; indeed, it is estimated that there are fewer than 50 on the road in North America, and this wonderfully evocative example of classic Americana is believed to be the only one in Europe.

Bonhams Australian motoring division is selling a rare and historically intriguing 1949 Jaguar XK120 alloy-bodied Roadster from the highly esteemed collection of The Late The Hon. John Dawson-Damer.
On Saturday 13th November Bonhams Australia will hold their first collectors’ motor car auction as a wholly owned subsidiary of the international company. Early entries for the sale indicate that a mouth watering array of cars will go under the hammer not least of which is the aforementioned Jaguar.
This rare car is the 17th Jaguar XK120 made and is one of only 58 right hand drive alloy-bodied roadsters produced. Chassis number ’660017′ was sold new in Australia and carries extensive local race history including a number of appearances at the world famous Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst, NSW. Having passed through a number of local owner/racers the car was purchased by world famous Lotus collector/historic racer and rally ace John Dawson-Damer in the late 1970s. Having been fully restored by Dawson-Damer in the mid-late 1990s the car has seen little use since and is offered for sale on the open market for the first time in over three decades. It is estimated to fetch at least AUD $140,000.
Robert Glover head of collectors’ motor cars at Bonhams Australia comments “Having overseen the successful sale of John’s exceptional collection of Lotus racing cars in late 2008, we feel both privileged and honoured that Bonhams have been entrusted with the sale of further motor cars from one of the most highly regarded collections in Australia and indeed the world.”
Also offered for sale from the same collection will be a 1979 Lotus Esprit JPS Edition. Purchased new from the factory by John Dawson-Damer, this single owner from new car is offered for sale without reserve. It will give collectors’ an affordable opportunity to purchase a part of the Dawson-Damer Lotus legacy not to mention a rare example of Lotus’s first true super car.

Bonhams achieved some strong results last weekend at its Collectors’ Motor Car and Automobilia sale in Oxford, U.K, fetching a grand total of £1,017,317 and an 86% sale rate with 44 out of 51 car lots selling.
The top price (£166,500) was paid, as expected, for a 1956 Bentley S1 Continental Fastback with coachwork by H J Mulliner, while the other Bentley in the sale — a 1964 Bentley S3 Continental Coupe with coachwork by H J Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd surpassed its estimate of £40,000 — 50,000, fetching £62,000.
A 1989 Ford RS200, Group B Homologation road car, attracted the second top price in the sale – £87,300.
A 1936 Alvis Speed 25 Saloon was hotly contended for in a ten way bidding battle in which a number of European countries were represented. The car — a barn discovery – eventually sold to an Irish bidder for £31,050, beating its estimate sale price of £18,000 — 22,000.
More modestly priced classics also performed well, including a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe which sold for £21,562 against a pre-sale estimate of £10,000 – £15,000.
Among the automobilia lots, an electric powered half-scale Ford model T child’s car sold for £9,200, an amount which could afford a real model, against an estimate of £4,000 — 5,000.
James Knight, Head of the Motoring department at Bonhams, comments; “This was our second sale at Oxford, and yet again delivered a very strong performance. The test for any new venue is looking at how you perform the second time. I am thrilled that Bonhams and this fabulous venue passed the test with flying colours.”

The Lake Maggiore 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia has achieved €260,500 ($516,000 NZ) at Bonhams Retromobile Sale in Paris. The Bugatti Type 22 that had lain submerged 53 metres below the surface of Lake Maggiore for over 70 years had attracted much pre-sale publicity (read story). A number of telephone bidders sparred against those in the room. The winning bidder – a European collector representing the Peter Mullin Collection in California – will show the car in its present condition in his museum, whereas the American underbidder had amazingly intended to restore the car.
A packed saleroom, surrounded by the cars on offer, witnessed over 70% of the lots on offer sell for a premium inclusive €6.72m total. An international audience participated in the room and from the large bank of telephone bidders. With the Euro remaining strong against UK Sterling, the Eurozone currencies were generally victorious. However, American bidders played a prominent part too, and a number of valuable cars are now destined for North America.
James Knight, Group Head of Bonhams’ Motoring department commented: The Lake Maggiore Bugatti was a tremendous result and I am pleased it has gone to a good home where it will be displayed in its present form.
