Ferrari reveals future plans to expand range

The Fiat group of vehicles accounts for many classic cars but it has become a major power in the current new car market and is currently undergoing a major restructuring. Reports of the upcoming changes have begun to surface and the most exciting concerns Fiat’s prize asset – Ferrari.

The plan is for Ferrari to get busy and release five new models over the next three years. A new 458 Spider, Ferrari Enzo “special series”, and four other new models are all on the cards. The cars have been announced by Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne at a press conference yesterday.

The 458 drop-top and an all-new 612 Scaglietti with a V12 engine are scheduled to enter production next year. Currently referred to as the F151, the 612 Scaglietti may also receive a hybrid powertrain.

Marchionne also announced a “new special series Enzo” would join the all-new 599 GTB Fiorano during 2012. This will be followed up with a major overhaul to the California, to create a California M facelift model. Also due for 2013 is a reworked and more powerful 458 Scuderia.

According to Marchionne both Ferrari and Maserati are looking to make each of their models more distinctive, almost creating sub-brands within the two companies. Maserati is expected to release two new models, placed below the GranTurismo, before 2015.

Three classic Ferraris sell for more than $1 million USD

While it’s the iconic 250 series of 1960s-era Ferraris that get top dollar and continue to break records at car auctions globally, the models that followed are quickly catching up. More high-rolling Ferrari enthusiasts are stumping up the big bucks to own a vehicle that they lusted after in their younger years. Like any collector cars, the more perfect and more rare the example, the more it’ll fetch at auction.

At last weeks RM Amelia Island auction in Florida, three classic Ferraris all around the 40-year-old mark each sold for over one million American dollars. The first example was a rare Daytona Spyder once owned by Edsel Ford II, it sold for $1,017,500 USD, inside the $1-1.25 million estimate range. The second was an alloy-bodied 275 GTB/4 in a copper shade, which was purchased new by Luigi Chinetti and displayed at the 1967 New York Auto Show, it went for $1,265,000 USD, slightly short of estimate. The real success of the show was a meticulously-restored, concours-winning Ferrari 275 that greatly exceeded its estimate with a whopping $1,650,000 USD winning bid.

In total RM Auctions achieve an 88% sale rate at Amelia Island, accounting for over $19 million USD in sales. Check out images of all three Ferraris by clicking on the link below.
