News: Ford brings back the Mustang Boss 302 (+video)

Ford has officially brought back the Boss 302 Mustang as the latest special edition machine to joint the blue oval’s ranks. This up-spec Mustang comes with plenty of equipment that will appeal to road racing fans like an upgraded clutch, short-throw shifter, adjustable suspension, improved brakes and naturally a more potent version of the 5.0-litre V8 engine. The reworked powerplant produces 440 horsepower and 380 lb-ft torque thanks to a new intake, a quad exhaust and a more aggressive cams.

To ensure a sporty ride, Ford added higher-rate coil springs, stiffer suspension bushings, and a larger rear stabiliser. While that’s fairly standard stuff, the company also installed a speed-sensitive electronic steering system (with three modes: Comfort, normal and sport), defeatable traction control / electronic stability control systems, and adjustable shocks and struts. The result is that Ford claims the Boss 302 will be able to lap a typical road course two seconds faster than the standard Mustang GT.

In terms of exterior styling it was inspired by the original 1969 model with the buyer’s choice of either a black or white roof panel, a thick C-stripe, closed fog lamp openings and a more aggressive front splitter and rear spoiler. There are more available colors than the standard Mustang choices and special hues include Competition Orange, Performance White, Kona Blue Metallic, Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat Metallic and Race Red.

The interior also gets some treatment with a dark metallic finish for the instrument panel, gauge cluster and door panel trim. There’s also an optional interior package with Recaro high performance seats.

The 2010 Boss 302 will be officially unveiled shortly at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the States, check out a video of the new machine below.
